Why buy natural minerals in person?

  • Scale. Photos make size hard to judge. Large geodes and specimens look very different in a room.
  • Color and light. Crystals, druzy and translucent stones change with lighting. Seeing them in person shows the real color.
  • Condition. You can check edges, stands and any natural flaws up close.
  • Fit. Bring room measurements or photos to see how a piece will work on a shelf, console or floor.

What should you look for when buying a geode, crystal or fossil?

  • Ask what it is and where it's from. A reputable seller should tell you the mineral name and, when known, its locality.
  • Ask if it's natural or treated. Some stones on the market are dyed, heat-treated or reconstructed. Natural pieces show irregular color and structure.
  • Check stability. For large geodes and specimens, look at the base or stand and ask about weight and moving it.
  • Think about placement. Some minerals can fade in strong direct sun, and some are soft or sensitive to water. Ask about care before you put a piece in a sunny window or a bathroom.
